The European COOPERANT project officially launched its four-year research initiative during a successful kick-off meeting hosted in Seville. Led by project coordinator IDENER.AI, the event convened international researchers, technical experts, and industry partners to align on strategic roadmaps aimed at overcoming the core limitations of conventional Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plants.
The kick-off meeting established the foundational operational framework for the project while addressing key technological hurdles. Consortium members participated in specialized workshops focused on project management, technology integration, artificial intelligence tools, and communication and dissemination strategies led by the IDENER.AI team.
Beyond the technical agenda, the consortium fostered collaborative connections on the opening day through a guided cultural tour of historic Seville, culminating in a networking dinner in the famous Barrio de Santa Cruz.
Redefining Solar Dispatchability and Operations
Conventional CSP facilities often face challenges associated with high-temperature material degradation, limited dispatchability, and high operational costs. COOPERANT addresses these constraints by designing a first-of-its-kind Concentrated Solar Power and Thermal Energy Storage (CSP-TES) system capable of operating with air as a heat transfer fluid at temperatures reaching up to 1000°C.
Key strategic goals discussed during the meeting include:
- High-Temperature Operations: Implementing an Open Volumetric Receiver (OVR) designed for extreme thermal conditions.
- Hybrid Thermal Energy Storage: Integrating solid-state mixtures with phase-change materials (PCM) to boost storage density and ensure continuous energy supply.
- AI-Driven Optimization: Developing the COOPERANT-AI Tool using deep learning and digital twins to optimize system controls and load management.
- Enhanced Viability & Scalability: Lowering production costs while providing continuous, dispatchable clean energy independent of immediate solar radiation.
Charting the Path Forward
With clear project milestones now defined, the COOPERANT consortium moves forward into its initial technical phases, aiming to deliver scalable, economically viable, and highly sustainable CSP solutions for the European energy market.
