Material science took center stage at the prestigious FEMS EUROMAT 2025 conference, where the COOPERANT project secured two highly coveted oral presentation slots. The event, one of Europe’s top summits for materials science and technology, provided the perfect arena for the consortium to prove that its high-temperature technology is both scientifically sound and perfectly aligned with the continent’s climate goals.
Rather than relying on passive poster sessions, COOPERANT delegates took to the podium to deliver two distinct, hard-hitting lectures that addressed the project from both a macro-strategic perspective and a micro-material level.
Aligning the Map: IDENER and HSLU Showcase Energy Roadmaps at FEMS EUROMAT 2025
FRANKFURT, GERMANY — Material science took center stage at the prestigious FEMS EUROMAT 2025 conference, where the COOPERANT project secured two highly coveted oral presentation slots.
The Macro View: Navigating the Net-Zero Roadmap
Patricia Royo, representing project coordinator IDENER.AI, delivered the first oral presentation, titled “Uncovering CSP-TES Synergies Aligned with Global and European Roadmaps.” Royo’s presentation provided a masterclass in how localized technological innovation fits into global geopolitics. She mapped out the exact synergies between COOPERANT’s incoming “3rd Generation” Concentrated Solar Power and Thermal Energy Storage (CSP-TES) systems and the rigorous decarbonization timelines set by the European Green Deal and international climate frameworks. For the policymakers and industrial strategists in attendance, Royo demonstrated that COOPERANT isn’t just an isolated lab experiment; it is a calculated, strategic response to the world’s urgent need for stable, non-intermittent green energy.
The Micro View: Mastering the Physics of Hybrid Storage
Shifting the focus from policy to pure physics, Adina Hochuli from the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) delivered a deeply technical lecture on the core breakthrough powering the project’s batteries: “Hybrid Sensible-Latent Heat Thermal Energy Storage for Concentrated Solar Power Applications.”
Hochuli pulled back the curtain on how COOPERANT is redesigning thermal storage from the inside out. Standard thermal storage usually relies on just one method of heat retention. COOPERANT, however, uses a hybridized system that combines:
- Sensible Heat: Storing energy by simply raising the temperature of a solid or liquid medium.
- Latent Heat: Exploiting the massive amounts of energy absorbed or released when a phase-change material (PCM) transitions from a solid to a liquid state.
By blending these two methods, Hochuli explained, the system can maintain a much more stable temperature profile during discharge, drastically boosting the thermodynamic efficiency of the power cycle and reducing the physical footprint of the storage tanks.
A Resounding Validation
The back-to-back oral presentations at EUROMAT 2025 generated significant buzz among the material science community. By demonstrating a flawless command of both macro-level energy policy and micro-level thermodynamic physics, the COOPERANT project proved it has the intellectual and technical scaffolding required to lead Europe’s next generation of solar infrastructure.
