COOPERANT project hits 12-Month milestone: mapping the future of solar energy in Portugal

By Alejandra

The COOPERANT project has successfully concluded its Month 12 Consortium Meeting, marking one year of intensive collaboration toward the next generation of Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) and Thermal Energy Storage (TES). Hosted by the HOLOSS, the meeting brought together the full international consortium to review a year of breakthroughs and set a high-speed pace for the upcoming semester.

The gathering was a pivotal moment for the project, shifting focus from foundational research to the active prototyping and validation phases that will define the project’s second year.

One Year In: Technical Achievements and Future Roadmap

The day was structured as a rigorous “health check” for the project’s six core Work Packages. Key highlights from the sessions included:

  • Pioneering Prototypes: Partner HSLU led an extended session on the development of novel hybrid materials. With the design phase nearing completion, the team is moving into the high-stakes prototyping phase of the volumetric solar receiver.
  • Digital Intelligence: IDENER.AI presented the latest updates on the AI tools that will serve as the “brain” of the CSP system, ensuring optimal energy dispatch even during fluctuating weather conditions.
  • Sustainability & Market Readiness: HOLOSS and IDENER.AI detailed the project’s holistic environmental impact assessments and the strategic roadmap for disseminating these results to the global renewable energy market.

Strategy and Social Synergy

The afternoon was dedicated to the CM18 planning session, where the consortium looked ahead to the 18-month milestone. This session finalized the action items for the next six months, ensuring that the hardware and software developments remain perfectly aligned as the project scales up.

Looking Ahead

As COOPERANT enters its second year, the focus shifts toward validation. The concepts discussed in Sevilla and the designs refined in Saarbrücken and Monçao are now becoming physical realities.
